On the 5th of October 2022, Bwalya Kalandanya was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) through its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit.

He together with four other accomplices was reportedly arrested for money laundering activities involving over K6 million.

Addressing the press, the DEC deputy public relations officer, Delight Haangala confirmed Kalandanya’s arrest saying that he had been arrested for money laundering which is contrary to Section 7 of the Prohibition and Prevention of Money Laundering Act No. 14 of 2001 as read together with section 3 (b) (i) and (ii) of the Amendment Act No. 44 of 2010

According to the DEC, Mr. Kalandanya allegedly concealed the true ownership of a property, specifically seven fully furnished flats at stand number JES/118 located in Jesmondine, Lusaka, valued at K6,125,000.00, on dates unknown but between January 1 and February 28 of 2022.

He reportedly further transferred the property to a 39-year-old woman identified as Beauty Chama who works as a Data Clerk at Civic Centre Clinic. The woman was also arrested alongside Bwalya and three other accomplices and were held in police custody ahead of their court hearing

This was however not the first time that Bwalya Kalandanya has been arrested. In February 2022, he was arrested by the Joint Investigations Team for fraudulent registration of a contractor’s certificate. He allegedly also used the same fraudulently acquired contractors certificate to bid for tenders that were awarded to him by the Government.
