Chef 187 Early Life

His real name is Kondwani Kaira and he also has two younger siblings. He was born into a family that takes education very seriously. In fact, he studied Business Administration at the Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts.

Chef 187 was interested in music from a very young age, but it was only when he saw the success and family support for his older brother Macky 2, one of Zambia's biggest hip-hop stars, that he too ventured into the music industry.

Chef 187 always talked about how moving to the Copperbelt Province and attending Kabundi High School influenced his interest in music.

Chef 187 Relationship

Chef 187 made a point of keeping his love life out of the tabloids, but we do know he has been in a long-term relationship – in fact he is so in love, he shared a special shout out to his love, Yolanda Kayanda, on Instagram.

And of course people on social media quickly called him out, as the couple have been together for more than five years, with no public talk of an engagement or marriage yet.

Chef 187 Career

As a rapper, Chef 187 established his own sound and created his own route not wanting to be seen as copying what his brother Macky 2 was doing. Chef 187 is signed to the record label Alpha Entertainment Music.

Acknowledging that his fan base is young, Chef 187 doesn't use vulgar language in his music, which he performs in the English, Bemba and Nyanja languages. With influences of West Coast hip hop and RnB, Chef 187's music is authentic and relatable, and he recorded his first song in 2005.

A few years later he collaborated on a diss track with his brother Macky 2, 2010, aimed at Slap Dee. In 2013, he won awards for Foolish Me, which he released.

Chef 187 hit the record studio in 2015, and it appears he never left. In July 2015, he released his debut album, Heart of a Lion, and a nine-track album Sitiliti Music. He also released an eight-track album Amenso Pamo the same year, and a year later the album Amnesia.

Amnesia was released to critical acclaim and secured him victory at the 2016 Zambia Music Awards.

Chef 187 also released Bon Appetite in 2019, a title indicative of his name perhaps? With 23 tracks for his fans to enjoy and dance and sing-along too, Bon Appetite features collaborations with Nigeria's Mr P and Skales, and some of Zambia's biggest artists, including his older brother Macky 2, Wezi and Afunika.

The prolific rapper has had huge success in Zambia's music industry with his songs Kumalila Ngoma, Foolish Me, Big Shofolo, 99 jobs, Love You, Can't Wait To Tell You I Told You and Unbeatable. His Amnesia and Bon Appetit album was highly successful.

If you need to get into the mood then Chef 187 is the guy to get you in the right one as he released 'Mood' in 2020, a track that he worked on with KP Illest. He also worked with Stevo and together they released the banger 'Imagine'.

Chef 187 Awards

His time since he stepped into the music industry, he's received a number of accollades. Below is a list of some of the awards he's won and nominations he's received.

2015 - Best Mainstream Album at the Zambia Music Awards (Won)
2015 - Best Hip Hop Album at the Zambia Music Awards (Won)
2015 - Best Mainstream Male Artist at the Zambia Music Awards (Won)
2015 - Best Collaboration at the Zambia Music Awards (Won)

Chef 187 Controversy

In 2017, Chef 187 was unwittingly dragged into some weird controversy.

He was accused of being satanic, with popular Pastor Jimmy K saying the rapper will end up in hell.

This was in response to Chef 187's song Isenge, which the Pastor said mocks God. The song was in collaboration with Abel Chungu.

Of course, Chef 187 didn’t just sit by and take this quietly – he responded to Pastor Jimmy K with a fire track Mu City on his Bon Appetit album.

Chef 187's Businesses

To coincide with the release of Amnesia, Chef 187 also released a clothing line, In a relationship Ne Ndalama, as gratitude to his fans loyalty.

He's also been chosen as a brand ambassador for Zambian airline Proflight and raised social issues in a role with the United Nations Development Programme.

He also worked with Hungry Lion and Coca Cola, and joined Coke Studio Africa collaborating with music producer Robhnan Nuri.

Musicians are realising more and more they can't only focus on the music to keep their fans loyal, and Chef 187 released a documentary about the inspiration behind one of his biggest songs, Good Teacher, Bad Kasukulu.

With any of the backlash Chef 187 receives, it seems he’s always taking it back to where it matters for him – the recording studio. His fans are in for a treat for all his upcoming music releases.
